Taking Your Photography to the Next Level - Part 1

The right photo/art organizations can help you take your work to the next level.

In this blog, we will take a look at an organization which supports living artists and showcases contemporary work.

Maryland Federation of Art gives this self-description on their website.

"MFA creates connections in the community by hosting professional avenues of exhibition for local, national, and international artists. Whether at MFA’s iconic location, Circle Gallery in Downtown Annapolis, or at alternate sites including local restaurants, public buildings, and in partnership with other nonprofits and institutions, the public is able to enjoy and learn from artists at all stages of their careers who are expanding community consciousness through their work.

We encourage artists to create, collectors to support, and art lovers to love through every program we take on."

MFA uses a traditional art gallery approach where the artists submit, via a web portal, to be juried. The juror then selects the pieces for that exhibit and also judges the final gallery selections for Best In Show awards. Jurors come from Universities and Art Schools all over the US and in many different areas of specialty and expertise.

Organizations like MFA exist in every art community around the world. Check out MFA or an organization like it in your area!!

Please follow the link to see my interview with Wil Scott for WilTalk with artists. Wil Scott, artist, retired from 30 years with the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Wil is on the Board of Directors for MFA and a well known member of the Annapolis and Maryland art scene.

Wil Talk began during the pandemic as a way to keep the community connected and continued as a way to feature artists from current exhibits. Mine is #79.

Watching the interview supports not just me and MFA, but also the artist community and working artists like you. Your watch shows that there is a demand for art in our lives. I thank you for taking the time to support this program.

Photo Cradle to Grave which is the inspiration for my next exhibit and hopefully a book. It is a project based on my hometown, a paper mill town, Spring Grove, PA. The collection uses new liminal photographs to invoke both new and old memories. And is an homage to the families who've lived there.
