So often photographers are encouraged to edit their photos to make them "better". We take away the blemishes on a flower, the crumbs on a table, we adjust the lighting.
What if we uncover the patience we had with film and do better to get it right in camera? What if the photo is a dark skyline? Barely visible? Do we force the viewer to come closer if they wish to see what we saw? To feel what we felt? Or do we edit to make it "easier" for them?
NYC - never sleeps and yet that night when I wasn't sleeping, NYC apparently was.
I pulled back the curtains to this view. I didn't realize the city could be this absent of light, even in fog.
The 31st floor of the Marriott - lower Manhattan - the Financial District.
And there I was ... alone.
I felt like the only one awake in the city that never sleeps.

4:04am precipice
thirty-one floors up
no lights. no motion. no sound.
skyline barely visible
moon-washed light
at the window
watching nothing
not a single flicker
only stillness
and then i vanished
into fog.
into glass.
into the liminal space
did i exist
yet disappear
dangerously close to the precipice,
404 error
city. self. not found.
